Castlecomer held several events over the the October Bank holiday weekend as part of the Savour Food Festival. There was some thing for everyone from cookery demos to food markets and live music.

To kick off the weekend, there was public local farm walk and talk to The Good Farm, a local free range pig farm which took place on Friday 25th October at 11.30am. Once the crowd gathered at the Local Community Hall in Castlecomer, together everyone made their way down and were welcomed by the farm owners of Linda and Duncan Collins. Although the weather wasn’t so pleasant, it did not stop the interest of people to come along and take the opportunity to experience life on the farm and a behind the scenes look at all its operations.

On Saturday 26th October, there was a live cookery demonstration with Janine Kennedy in the Castlecomer Community Hall. With winter looming and Christmas just around the corner, Janine kindly demonstrated some of her most favourite winter warmer recipes, ensuring we are winter ready with some delicious recipes and top culinary tips.

This was followed by something a little different, the following day, as many joined the highly knowledgeable Maura Brennan in her discussion on the medicinal plants of Castlecomer on Sunday 27th October 2019.

If that wasn’t enough, the beautiful estate yard hosted a Halloween food market on Monday 28th October. Local small food producers including Breagagh Artisan Foods, The Good Farm (free range pork), Costello’s Beer, Dick Dooley, Nonies Kitchen and Goatsbridge Trout all gathered in the heart of the   estate yard and sold their produce to the public. The tasty smells were accompanied by beautiful aesthetics of an open fire that kept everyone warm on the cold crispy day. To add to the atmosphere, the market really came alive with live music from a local band of Knots Down and Out which drew the crowd in from off the streets and were enjoyed by all.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any better, and to add that little bit of sweetness to the weekend, all above events were free of charge to the public and no pre-booking was required, which meant all were welcome with no limit on numbers!

And just to top it off, The Castlecomer Discovery Park hosted a family forage event for all the children and a Demo with Keith Boyle in the Castlecomer Discovery Park on Monday 28th October to keep the children entertained for only €8 per person.

Overall the weekends event were an out and out success and we are already looking forward to next year.
