Castlecomer is a vibrant market town in the heart of Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. Its rich history and vibrant culture along with world class activities, accommodation and dining make it the ideal place for a family weekend break, romantic getaway or even a boutique wedding.

The unique, grand architecture and layout of the town was inspired by the Italian town of Alsinore and was funded by the wealth generated from its coal mining industry, which ceased in the 1960s. The small footprint of the town means that the incredibly popular Discovery Park, Creamery House with its Lady Ann Restaurant and the boutique Avalon House Hotel are all within a short stroll of each other.

Golfers will be delighted with the magnificent Castlecomer Golf Club, boasting some of the finest woodland scenery in Ireland. Thrill seekers of all ages  will find a huge range of high adrenaline activities as the Discovery Park. The culturally curious will be delighted with the craft shops, mining museum and pop-up art galleries nestled in the side streets. For more sedate outdoor fun, boating, angling, woodland walks and cycling are all available throughout the year.

Our History

The first record of a settlement here dates from 1171 AD when William Marshall, the 1st Earl of Pembooke built a castle opposite what is now the entrance to the Discovery Park. This name of the town name is derived from the Irish Caislean an Chumai which translates to “the Castle at the confluence of the Waters“, the “waters” referring to the rivers Deen, Brocagh and Cloghogue that converge here. Having been destroyed during the Battle of Castlecomer, the town was rebuilt in the present grand style by the Wandesforde family, wealthy landed gentry from Yorkshire, UK. The Wandesfordes used the wealth generated from the local coal mining industry to further enhance the town, building some of unique architecture that still stands today.
